Aftermath of SA-Merritt Line Brawl/ BCHL POW/ Hump Day/

The league office announced the suspensions from the October 8th line brawl between Salmon Arm and Merritt. Details can be found here

If you need a refresher, the video can found here.

A double whammy to SA goaltender, Kris Moore, who not only is suspended for 5 games, but also broke his hand in the dust up with Merritt goaltender Tyler Steel. Initial reports indicate he will be out anywhere between 4-6 weeks.

Brain Wiebe over at the Making Cents Blog has a good run down on the entire situation, including an interview with Cents' Head Coach and GM, Luke Pierce. That can be found be clicking here.

Personally, its always exciting seeing the goaltenders going toe-to-toe. However, this is exactly what the BCHL and Hockey Canada want to get away from. I know this, that the fans that were at the Sun Wave Centre, didn't turn their heads away and leave when it was all going down. Lastly, Did anyone else immediately think of the end of Slap Shot when they watched the video?

Switching gears, The BCHL announced their POW on Monday, and its hard to argue against this week's honouree. Coquitlam Express forward Massimo Lamacchia had a weekend to remember. The entire write-up can be found here. Ten points in three games will get you noticed pretty quick.

Also congratulations to Kings forward, Chad Niddery as he received honourable mention for his six point weekend.

What do you think would be the resulting action of the BCHL, if one of its' players pulled what NY Islanders defenseman, James Wisniewski did in a game against the Islanders on the weekend? I can bet it would be a lot more then just a two game suspension. I know Sean Avery isn't a choir boy by any means, however, what Wisniewski did crossed some many lines. Yes we all had a chuckle, however, how many young fans, KIDS, go to or watch NHL games? I think the NHL missed the boat on that one. Do you disagree? Let me know in the comment section below.

Are you as confused as I am with the Hit to the Head penalty? What is it? How do you define it? How do they differentiate? I asked these questions to League President, John Grisdale on Friday. He did his best to put some clarity on the issue. However, its still such a grey area.

There are some many circumstantial factors that go into every potential blow to the head penalty. The size of the two players involved, timing, intent, who has onus? The Hitter or hitee?

Don't get me wrong, its an well intention rule but dogged by inconsistent and arbitrary circumstances. What do you think?

Also the new rules applied to goaltender interference have brought up some interesting questions. The new rule does state, the second offending player on his team will be given  game misconduct. Now this leaves it open for one team to push players into their net and own goaltender to draw a penalty and game misconduct. Furthermore, we have seen goaltenders go down with what looks like to be gun shot when an opposing player is near or around his net. It's a tactic that I have seen been displayed once already this season. I know goaltenders need to be protected, it's a given. However I don't want this to develop like the NFL's obsession of coddling their Quarterbacks.
