Just working on some game prep for this Weekends home-and-home with the Victoria Grizzlies.
The Kings have taken a day off from practice. However, in the mean time, the coaching staff has taken the boys on a mid morning hike to experience the backwoods of Powell River.
I'm excited to call my first game at one of the nicer facilities in the BCHL, the Bear Mountain Arena come Saturday. As a broadcaster, and my colleagues can attest to this, you judge the rink by the booth you call a game from. It's a weird quirk of mine, but the first thing I look for in a rink is the perch I call a game from. "The Bear" has a nice enclosed booth on the main mezzanine level which puts you right at centre ice. However, early in its inception, the broadcast booth was dubbed the "fish bowl" as the glass enclosed room gave off an echo and a vibe that you were inside just that, a fish bowl. Now the arena staff have since cut a piece out at the top to let the crowd noise in.
This home-and-home is important, as there is 8 points on the table. Like Kent Lewis said this week, the more points you get in September, the better you are off come February. A first round bye in the playoffs can do wonders to keep a team fresh for a deep playoff run.
On another note, it shall be interesting to follow how the players react to their first "3 in 3" of the season. Sunday afternoon's early start time against Surrey at the Hap could be tough. Then again, the way this team stresses fitness, I don't think we should have any problem.
As for me, the next few days will be busy getting notes prepared for the "3 in 3"
check back later.
