WEEKEND ROUND UP

  • The Kings may have clinched first place in the Coastal Conference and with that a first round bye, however there is still plenty to play for.
  • The Kings need two more points to clinch first place in the BCHL regular season standings. The Vipers are the only team standing in the way. Vernon would have to win their remaining five games and hope for the Kings to lose out the remaining six games on their schedule. It is still possible for the two teams to tie for first place.
  • One more win ties the franchise single season point total at 89. The Kings need three points in their remaining games to pass that record. They can also set a new single season win total in franchise history. The Kings would need to win four of their remaining six to do that. Both records are currently held by the '93-94 Paper Kings. That season they finished with a 44-15-1 record for 89 points.
  • As everyone is well aware by now, Michael Garteig only needs one shut out to set a new single season BCHL record. His shut out on Thursday tied the mark set by Brad Thiessen in 2005-2006. Garteig was unlucky not to have picked up clean sheets Friday and Saturday. I haven't seen him play better then he is right now.
  • Matt Garbowsky still leads the BCHL in goals with 40 and still has a good chance of hitting 45 on the season. I will admit I am personally cheering for him to win the scoring title. No question he is one of, if not the best player in the league. However I find him an even better person away from the ice. Show me a player who is funnier than him. The kid has a great sense of humour.
  • Don't look now but Garteig can also set another goaltending record. As it stands now, Garteig's 1.58 GAA is a BCHL record. Vernon's Blake Voth set the record last year with a 1.79 GAA. Garteig does have some breathing room with six games left.
  • As a team, the Kings helped themselves this weekend in their pursuit of the BCHL record for fewest goals against in the season. Once again that record was set last year by Vernon with 119. The Kings have only allowed 97.
